Hi,

Babies love to be touched and cuddled. An aromatherapy massage helps in strengthening the bond between babies and parents, as touch is very important for babies. A few guidelines to remember while using essential oils with babies.:

Always dilute the essential oils in a carrier oil and use.

Dosage: 1-3 drops in 30 ml carrier oil. The no. of drops of essential oils should be very low as babies are delicate and sensitive. Remember less the better. Use only minimum amount of essential oils and only the safest ones mentioned below. When mixed the final oil should give off a very light fragrance specially for newborns -3 months.

Do not exceed the amount of essential oils in recipes.

Avoid getting the oil anywhere near eyes and mouth of young babies.

Rotate different oils. Do not use the same essential oil continuously for a long period. Or give a break in using the oil.

Use only pure, organic oils.

Use only one or two oils at a time to create a massage oil.

The oils used for babies differ according to the babies problems for eg. Colic, nappy rash, fretfulness etc. and also the age. As the baby grows it is safe to use certain oils. But the safest oils which can be used at all times and stages of a baby’s growth are lavender, Roman Chamomile, German Chamomile. If the baby is 2-6 months old then neroli, and geranium can be added to the above oils. 6-12 months, grapefruit, eucalyptus and teatree can be added to the list.

The following aromatic baby massage oil will help calm and relax the baby, protect the baby from diaper rash and the keep baby’s skin clean and sweet smelling.

100 ml of almond oil,

20 ml jojoba oil

2 drops of either Rose, Roman chamomile, neroli, or lavender oil, or 1 drop of rose oil and 1 drop of roman chamomile oil
