The circulatory system is our body’s transportation system which distributes oxygen, food and water to every system of our body. Normal blood circulation requires efficient interaction between three major organ systems- 1) A healthy heart muscle which pumping blood constantly through it. 2) A vast network of healthy blood vessels from large arteries to minute capillaries to transport metabolites and nutrients to nourish every body cell. 3) Healthy lungs to provide necessary oxygen-carbon dioxide exchange to sustain metabolism and life.
Ailments of the circulatory system are particularly those which affect these three organs - heart, blood vessels and lungs. 1) Coronary heart disease and its underlying blood vessel disease, arteriosclerosis. In the lay persons language, heart attacks. Another related ailment is cerebrovascular accidents (strokes). 2) High blood pressure and other blood vessel problems. 3) Rising problem with pulmonary circulation has made COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) the fifth major cause of death in the United States.
Factors which contribute to circulatory problems are hypertension (high blood pressure), high levels of triglycerides and cholesterol in the bloodstream, and smoking. There are other factors such as obesity, heredity and emotional stress.
