Angelica oil is an essential oil which is extracted from the seeds of the herb called rhizome. This oil is not very thick in consistency and is regarded of medium viscosity.

The rhizome herb is a native of Africa, however, it was transported from there to various parts of Europe and Asia. Today, this herb is commonly found in Scotland, Holland and even Germany.

The herb is known as angelica because it typically flowers around 8th May. This date is also celebrated as St. Michael’s or the Archangel’s day. It is because of this reason that the herb is planted liberally in monasteries and churches. Due to its appearance, the herb is also known as angel grass. The herb is quite large in appearance and requires a lot of water in order to grow. It can survive well in a water logged field. The herb has large leaves which are broad and pointed. The leaves are further divided into small leaves. The flowers of the herb are small in size and white or green in color. They have a strong aroma which is characteristic to the rhizome. The aroma of the herb is quite earthy and seems fresh and spicy. It can be mixed with other essential oils like frankincense, Clary sage, patchouli and certain citrus oils.

The essential oil is extracted through steam distillation. The stems, leaves and seeds are used to make the essential oil but it is the roots of the herb that are used in the largest quantity. The essential oil is colorless however, when it oxidizes, it begins to turn pale yellow. As the oil ages, it becomes brown.

In fact, when Europe was swept with the black plague in the middle of the seventeenth century, the juice of Angelica herb was consumed as an antidote to the illness. The herb has also been used in various confectionary items as well as to flavor gin.
