Chamomile oil is produced from the Asteraceae family of plants. In aromatherapy, there are two major kinds of chamomile oil, Roman Chamomile and German Chamomile, both made from the same species. Essential oil from Roman Chamomile has a sweet fragrance, much like apples, and isĀ soft, clear blue with a viscosity like water. The latter has a similar fragrance, but more straw-like, and is a darker blue with a medium viscosity. The plants are cultivated in Hungary, Egypt, Eastern Europe, France, Italy, Spain and Morocco and the essential oil is produced by a distillation process.
Both Roman and German oils are similar, but with slight differences in their properties and usage.
Both oils have has properties that are antibiotic, analgesic, anti-infectious, anti-neuralgic, anti-inflammatory, antiphlogistic, antiseptic, bactericidal, choalgogue, antispasmodic, cicatrisant, emmenagogue, sedative, nervine, digestive, sudorific, stomachic, hepatic, vermifuge, and vulnerary.

Chamomile oil, is a calming oil that eases and relaxes the mind. It can be used to ease fear and anxiety, and will calm you when you are worried or tense. It is useful during times of physical and emotional stress. It promotes peacefulness and enhances the feeling of calmness and relaxation.
It has physical benefits too, and is a strong anti-septic agent. Providing a nervine action, it eases pain caused by nerve problems like neuralgia, toothaches, earache and headache. It is also helpful for women going through menstrual cramps or menopause. It is a mild laxative, and is good for gastrointestinal problems. It brings relief from diarrhea, ulcers, flatulence, colitis, and bowel inflammation. It is also good for genitor-urinary tract problems.
Chamomile is wonderful for the skin, and can treat skin problems. It soothes and calms, and at the same time, cleanses burns, blisters, wounds boils and ulcers. It also helps with skin diseases like dermatitis, eczema, rashes, wounds and other issues. Dry skin will also benefit, and allergies that affect the skin can be eased.

For a soothing bath or massage, add 10 drops of the essential oil to a warm bath, and soak yourself in it. When diluted with a carrier oil, it can be massaged into the skin or used as a compress that will ease headaches. It can also be used as a disinfectant around the house, which will also spread a wave of peace around your room. A massage with diluted chamomile oil will relax sore and tense muscles and joints. It can also be used with children, but should not be used with pregnant women.
