Deep Tissue Massage Therapy

A deep tissue massage is a type of massage therapy that uses deep, strong strokes, with the aim of reaching the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. The ultimate aim is to realign them and bring them back to their original state. It is very useful for muscles that are chronically tense, like stiff necks, the lower back, and shoulders. Often, stress manifests itself in these muscles, and a deep tissue massage can relax them. This works in an opposite way, and relaxes the mind by relaxing the body.

Deep tissue massage is similar to classical massage, but movements are slower and strokes have more pressure and are concentrated on areas that are tense or painful.

How does it work?
Stress in the mind normally tells in the body. Chronic muscle tension leads to the formation of adhesions, or bands of rigid tissue

When there is chronic muscle tension or injury, there are usually adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. These adhesions block circulation, and often cause pain. More often, they cause blockages in the flow of your energy, and cause physical problems for you.

A deep tissue massage physically breaks down these blockages. Not only does this relieve pain, but it also restores the muscles to normalcy. In an effort to free these blockages, a therapist uses intense, direct pressure and friction, applied across the muscle’s grain. Because of this, many people find that they experience discomfort. In some cases, they may even feel intense pain. Many times, this is just negative energy leaving your body. But, it’s very important to let your therapist know that you’re feeling pain.

After a deep tissue massage, you may also feel some stiffness or pain for a couple of days. This usually goes away, but your therapist may apply ice to the area after the massage.

Uses of Deep Tissue Massage:
Classical massage therapy is generally used for relaxation, and for providing a ‘feel good effect’. Conversely, Deep Tissue Massage is used to provide relief from very specific physical problems. Keep in mind that mind and body are interlinked, and providing physical relief will usually improve your state of mind as well. Deep tissue massage can help in:

  • Chronic pain
  • Rehabilitation from injuries.
  • Movement problems.
  • Posture problems.
  • Repetitive strain injuries like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Arthritic pain.
  • Muscle spasms
