Poison oak or poison ivy is one of the most infamous plants in the history of mankind. Almost everyone who’s had an encounter with these plants has had a painful story to tell. The poison oak, due to a chemical that its leaves have, can cause an extremely painful rash. There may be other allergic symptoms like itching, inflammation, or dermatitis.
No matter how much you try to wash it off, the chemical of the poison oak leaves is not that easy to get rid of. The kind of dermatitis that is caused due to poison ivy can be cured using aromatherapy. Oil based products are not recommended in this kind of dermatitis. Therefore, the essential oils can be added to a vinegar base for topical application. Later, when the dermatitis becomes dry and itchy, lotions can be used to soothe and relieve itchiness.
Aromatherapy To Get Rid Of Poison Ivy
The first thing to do in case of an itchy rash caused due to poison ivy is to apply peppermint oil. The menthol of the oil can help decrease the itching and the burning. As the rash soothes down, it is easier to contain and treat. An oat bath, with some peppermint oil will give a better result and therefore that too should be tried out.
First determine the temperature of water that works for you. It is recommended that for a soak, the water should be tepid. However, if your skin is not able to stand warm water, you can use cold water too.
First get four cups of oats. Try to get the quick cooking ones because they can be easily dissolved. Add to the oats, about three drops of cypress chamomile, lavender, or geranium oil. To this, add a drop of peppermint oil and a cup of Epsom salts. Teat these together in a double layered cheesecloth or a muslin cloth and drop them in a lukewarm bath. Now soak yourself in this bath for a few minutes. You can repeat this two three times a day for as long as it takes for the dermatitis to get cured.
Another great poison oak remedy is to mix together three drops each of lavender, cypress, and peppermint oil.
