Aromatherapy : Alternative Cancer Treatment

Friday, October 9th, 2009

For a long time, different fragrances have been used to treat various ailments of the body and mind. This practice, which was initiated thousands of years ago by some of the earliest known civilizations, is today seen as an effective treatment and therapeutic method.

Fragrances are mainly used by extracting essential oils from the various parts of fragrant and aromatic plants. These aromas have different effects on the mind and body, and can be used in various forms. Though aromatherapy first began to be used commercially in the early twentieth century, it has had many takers even in the past. However, it was only in the late twentieth century that the true benefits of the therapy were scientifically tested and presented to the world. With the backing of this scientific data, many have resorted to aromatherapy to decrease their sufferings and increase the quality of their life.

Though not suggested as a treatment for cancer, aromatherapy can prove to be beneficial for managing the symptoms and improving the quality of life for the patient. The side effects of the treatments that cancer patients undergo can also be managed with the help of aromatherapy.

Our nose has many smell receptors which carry the chemical messages to the brain, which in turn controls moods and emotions. Certain fragrances affect our moods in a very positive manner. In a similar manner, these aromatic oils that are obtained from plant matter are full of vitality and life force. This can affect the body in many different ways.

The scents used in aromatherapy can be used in two ways. One, that is more commonly used, is the inhalation method in which the oil is diffused using heat. Another equally common way of inhalation is by placing a few drops of the oil near the patient so that the aroma keeps drifting to the patient. The other method is direct topical application. While direct application can be really useful, it is not always preferred because the oils can often be very concentrated and can end up burning the skin. Most of the oils, before being topically applied, have to be diluted with rubbing alcohol, vegetable oils, or other carrier oils.
