Basil essential oil is also known as Ocimum Basilicum officially. Basil as we know it in our everyday life is used as an herb for flavoring food and in cooking. This essential oil extracted from the herb has several medicinal benefits and is often used for treating colds, sinus, fevers, congestion and menstrual problems.

Properties:  Greenish-yellow in color and watery in viscosity, basil essential oil has a clear aroma that has a sweet yet peppery note.

Origin of basil:  Originally cultivated in the Pacific Islands and in Asia, the herb is now grown in the USA and Europe. An average basil herb grows up to 1 meter to 3 feet. The word basil comes from a Greek word – Basilicos that means royal or king. The basil used in Italian cuisine tastes a bit different than the Basil that is used in Ayurvedic medicine. The oil of basil is extracted from the flowering tops and leaves by a process of steam distillation.
