Aromatherapy Treatment for ADHD

In our age, ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder has become very common in children. ADHD is a neurobehavioral disorder. This disorder is characterized by persistent inattentiveness to surroundings and an impulsive behavior which is measurably more severe than the general behavior of children in the same age range. This is usually a chronic disorder in which the symptoms are carried on to adult life.

Studies have suggested that of all the children affected with ADHD, which is about 20% of all school going children, only about half are on any kind of medication to treat this disorder. ADHD can impair many aspects of an individual’s life, when the symptoms are carried on to adolescence or adulthood. Therefore, treatment is absolutely essential. As adults, children who have suffered from this disorder tend to develop several coping mechanisms.

While medication is a way of treating ADHD, there are many who try to treat this with alternative methods. Many parents choose pure essential oils over drugs that could have harmful side effects.

Since this a neurological disorder, the medication has to, in some way, affect the brain and change the neural signal emitting from it. Pure essential oils are rich in chemical components that are able to cross into the brain to directly work on it and finally heal it. Essential oils therefore become a very powerful tool to treat this disorder.

Aromatherapy oil for ADHA treatment

In a recent study, the effects of certain essential oils, namely lavender, vetiver, and cedarwood were studied. The recipient was treated with various essential oils and the brain waves were studied after application of each. It was found that Vetiver was most effective essential oil in treating this disorder and there was an improvement in all of the recipients. Cedarwood oil showed improvements in 83% of the recipients and lavender showed improvements in 60%.

These oils have relaxing and soothing effects on the body and can be readily used for many of the common ailments that we suffer from. It is best to buy lavender oil for treating ADHD because even though vetiver essential oil has been found to be most effective in this disorder, it is expensive and is difficult to obtain. Lavender on the other hand, is a universal oil that can be bought from virtually anywhere. However, since it is the most readily available essential oil, it is also the most commonly adulterated one. Therefore, make sure that whatever oil you are buying is real essential oil and doesn’t contain any adulteration.
