Essential Oils For Mouth Ulcer Treatment

Mouth ulcers or oral ulcers can be referred to as open sores in the mouth which are caused by the breaking of the mucous membrane or epithelium in the mouth. The prime mouth ulcer causes include physical abrasions in mouth, chemical injuries including those caused by an intake of acidic fruits, smoking, microbial infections, consuming strong medicines, and the presence of cancerous cells in the body.

Mouth ulcers cause pain and inflammation in the mouth making it difficult to chew and swallow food. Oral ulcers can also cause excessive salivation, bad breath, mild fever, and bleeding.

Some of the home remedies for mouth ulcer are listed as follows:

  • You are advised to chew a few basil leaves with water to cure mouth ulcers. This will help relieve mouth ulcers.
  • Certain minerals including sulfur are very effective in curing mouth ulcers. You must eat a lot of raw onions, a rich source of sulfur, for mouth ulcers relief.
  • You can prepare a mixture of honey and coconut milk and use it to massage your ulcers.
  • You can gargle with fresh coconut water at least three times a day to relieve mouth ulcers.
  • You must avoid eating spicy foods.

Aromatherapy Oils To Treat Mouth Ulcer

Some of the essential oils that can be used to cure oral ulcers are:

  • Peppermint essential oil is known for its cooling effect and anti-inflammatory properties. You can apply a drop of peppermint oil on mouth ulcers to relieve pain and irritation. It also prevents bad breath, one of the consequences of mouth ulcers.
  • Tea tree oil can also help relieve and cure ulcers, especially when the ulcers are a result of bacterial and viral infections. Tea tree oil is an excellent anti-microbial agent.
  • You can also use lemon essential oil to cure mouth ulcers. Lemon essential oil is rich in Vitamin C, which helps relieve ulcers.
  • Other essential oils than can be used as aromatherapy constituents to cure oral ulcers include germanium essential oil and myrrh essential oil.

You can mix any of these essential oils in water and use it as a mouth ulcer remedy. You can also use these essential oils in water to gargle. Mouth ulcers can be so very painful. While they may appear small, they can cause a lot of pain and irritation to the patient. You cannot eat, cannot talk, and even opening your mouth can be painful.

Mouth ulcers: A mouth ulcer is actually a nerve that has gotten exposed. The lining in the mouth is sensitive and a small break in it can expose the nerve below it. So, when anything touches it, whether a toothbrush, liquid or food, it can cause excruciating pain. Mouth ulcers are caused because of brushing or hitting a place with your brush, biting by mistake, a rough tooth, new braces or if you have scalded your tongue because of hot drinks or food. These generally stick around for a week or more, unless you check the source of damage (like a rough tooth) and get it treated.

Aphthous ulcer is another type of mouth ulcer that happens because of stress or hormonal changes. This ulcer takes longer to heal and can take a few weeks, until the patient feels more relaxed.

Mouth ulcers can also happen because of immune disorders, inflammatory bowel disease and herpes infection. You can even get mouth ulcers because of a folate, vitamin B12 or iron deficiency.

Prevention: Sometimes you just can’t help it if an ulcer has to happen; but, here are a few guidelines to keep them at bay, as much as possible.

* Good oral and dental hygiene is important. When you brush, take care not to damage your teeth and gums. Also, visit your dentist regularly for check-ups.

* Include a lot of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fish, milk and lean meat in your diet. These will nourish your body with all those nutrients that you require like vitamins, minerals, iron and zinc. This will boost your immunity and you will be able to resist infections.

Aromatherapy Treatment: You can use aromatherapy to treat mouth ulcers and gum pain. Tea tree, lemon and geranium are the flavors of essential oil that can be beneficial. You can add a drop of each essential oil into half or a full glass of water. Gargle and rinse your mouth with it. You can also dab a drop or two of tea tree oil on a cotton swab and apply it on the ulcer for relief.
