Aromatherapy is a natural therapy which makes use of the aromas of natural plants and herbs for healing people.



The aroma used is of the natural oils extracted from the natural plants and herbs. These natural oils are also known as essential oils or aromatherapy oil.

Essential oils directly affect the mental and physical health of the patient; therefore they are useful for creating emotional balance in emotionally disturbed persons.   These oils are highly volatile therefore they must be stored in an air tight container. Aromatherapy can be applied in a various ways.

Some Aromatherapy methods of application are

Massage – It is one of the oldest and best methods to use aromatherapy. When essential oils are used for massage it works through the capillaries and cell tissues. It helps the essential oils to get absorbed readily in to the blood stream.

Bath – This method could be used for having a wonderful and a relaxing experience. Add few drops of essential oils to the bath water and soak in. The bath water should be well agitated before using it.

Inhalation – It is one of the best techniques of application. It is quite helpful to get relieved of all the respiratory tract problems. It affects the nervous system through the olfactory system. It could be done either by adding few drops of essential oils to the hot water and inhaling the vapor or by putting few drops of essential oil on a handkerchief or cotton ball and inhaling the aroma. Inhalers are also available in the market for this purpose.

Compresses – It is useful in case of injury, inflammation and is highly effective for pain relief and first aid.



Hot compress is effective for periods cramps, chronic pain etc. Cold compress is effective for sprains, headaches and reducing swelling.

Aromatherapy can also be applied through cosmetic items like creams and gels.
