You should treat these oils as medicines and use them carefully as outlined by an expert to enjoy the full benefits of aromatherapy therapy. The safety guidelines outlined below are not the complete safety instructions on the usage of essential oils but general guidelines. Always consult a professional aromatherapy practitioner before use. • Always dilute the essential oils before use. These oils are highly concentrated and can affect you if you are sensitive to them.
You can sparingly use tea tree oil and lavender oil in aromatherapy treatment. If you have sufficient knowledge in the usage of oils and do not have any sensitivity to any oil, only then you can go in for the direct usage of oils. • Always go in for a skin patch test before applying the oil in the aromatherapy treatment. In this test, you apply a minuscule portion of oil to your hand or palm or foot and observe any allergic reaction. If you detect any reaction it means you are sensitive to the oil and do not use it. This is a good test for detecting your body’s sensitivity to the oil.You can even test essential oil in its pure state.
Wash and dry your forearm with an unscented vegetable soap. Apply one drop of aroma oil to the crook of your arm. Bend it for 5 minutes so that it touches your shoulder. Open and close once more.
Wash it off immediately in case of irritation either with water and soap or cotton ball dipped in vegetable oil or milk. In case oil has entered your eyes then wipe it off in the above manner or wash with water poured from a height of 3-5 inches for 15 minutes. Then consult a doctor. Prolonged usage and uneven spreading of the oil can cause toxicity. The symptoms associated with toxicity are coughing, headaches, fatigue, urine disturbances, liver enlargement and liver pain. So therapists should use ventilated rooms and should wash their hands thoroughly after use. • If you are pregnant or suffer from asthma, epilepsy or any other diseases, avoid the usage of aromatherapy treatment.
• Use small amount of essential oil in aromatherapy treatment. Since these oils are very concentrated, a tiny amount will give you the effect that you are looking for. • Some oils like wormood, pennyroyal, onion, camphor, horseradish, wintergreen, rue, bitter almond and sassafras should be used by or only under the guidance of aromatherapy practitioners. • Keep these oils out of the reach of children. If the child has to apply the oil, ensure that an adult is present some oils like citrus oil smell very sweet and fit to drink but they can be poisonous. • Do not take essential oils internally, unless specified by the expert and that too in the amount specified.
Excess intake of oils can be harmful. • Since these oils are highly inflammable, keep them away from fire hazards like gas. • Allergic Effects - Temporary nausea, stomach pain, irritation, dizziness, sweating, mucous membrane and palpitation are the symptoms associated with allergic reactions. The toxicity of the essential depends on the concentration of the chemical compounds. Therefore it should be used as per instructions and under proper guidance.
